Steve Brownrigg- MS, NCC, PLADC, LMHP
After over 25 years as a small business owner, I began to feel the
need to
contribute to society in a more personal and intimate way.
In 1998, I began working informally with addicts and alcoholics
seeking recovery. I then decided that the work I had been doing on
a volunteer basis with addicts and alcoholics should be pursued on
a full-time, professional basis. Over time, I had noticed that many
addicts and alcoholics faced many life challenges, including mental
disorders and various traumatic experiences, which made it diffi-
cult for them to initiate recovery on their own. Many, also, found it
difficult to sustain their recovery for similar reasons. There also
seemed to be a severe lack of qualified professionals who were
serving this population who were experiencing what we now refer
to as "co-occurring disorders." With this particular need in mind, I
entered, attended and graduated the Masters Program in Commu-
nity Counseling at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and am
now licensed in Nebraska as a Mental Health provider (LMHP
#3325). At the same time that I pursued mental health licensure,
I took the additional necessary courses at Metropolitan Community
College to obtain my provisional licensure in Alcohol and Drug
Counseling (PLADC #P500). I am also a Nationally Certified Coun-
selor (NCC #202722). My primary field of counseling developed in
the treatment of Co-Occurring Disorders, or the treatment of Addic-
tions that coexist with other Mental Health Concerns or Disorders.
In 2005, I began work at an agency where I served this population,
and eventually ran the Outpatient Chemical

Dependency Program there. I then decided to enter private prac-
tice, so that I could have more flexibility in the types of counseling
populations that I could serve, and in the way I chose to deliver
counseling services.
